Let me be clear and frank: transvaginal mesh needs to be recalled. A July 2011 safety alert issued by the FDA indicates that the transvaginal use of surgical mesh represents a serious health risk for women. It can result in life-long negative consequences that may inhibit a woman’s normal life. Causing infection, bleeding and severe pelvic pain in some patients, transvaginal mesh can impede urination and sexual intercourse. Furthermore, the FDA report intones that these side effects are “not rare” as previously believed. The last straw is that vaginal mesh has not been found to offer any medical benefits over other means of pelvic organ prolapse repair.
